one article from the New York Times (no opinions). You will have weekly

SYLLABUS
OVERVIEW
Ever
wondered how Americans communicate in a business setting? What are the
rules? What is the language like? What are appropriate or inappropriate
topics to talk about? Did you ever think of yourself making a
presentation for a company you work for in front of ten, twenty or even a
hundred people? Could you run and participate in a business meeting? Do
you think you could speak up and share your opinion? Could you tell a
joke and be entertaining in an office party? Most of all, would you be
able to do all of these things in English? If you have ever pondered any
of these questions then this course is for you! It is designed to help
you practice and improve communicating in American English in a
professional business environment. Here you will be encouraged and
challenged to try out your new language and get more confident about
speaking.
TEXT
1. Communicating in Business by Simon Sweeney
2. The New York Times
Other
materials will be provided by me however, at times I may instruct you
to bring articles or other materials to class yourselves. I will give
you specific instructions when to do this and what to bring.
OBJECTIVES
You
will be expected to participate in all activities. This will include
role-plays and unplanned speaking. You will be working both individually
and in pairs or groups. You will learn about American business life and
etiquette and be able to interact in various business settings. You
will improve your vocabulary, pronunciation and confidence in using the
English language in an American business environment. You will share
your experiences and opinions and learn new things about yourself and
others’ experiences and points of view.
Warning About Plagiarism
Plagiarism
is the use of another person's material without proper acknowledgement.
Your statements should be your own. Your writing should be your own. If
it is someone else's, you should put quotation marks around the
material if the words are exact, and you should use proper citation. If
the ideas are someone else's, you should use your own words and sentence
structure and provide the proper citation. The university penalty for
plagiarism can be severe, so we will concentrate on how to avoid it. If
you plagiarise in this class, I will give you no credit for the
assignment and ask you to revise it. If you plagiarise repeatedly you
will fail.
ASSIGNMENTS
I will give assignments (homework) during the semester. Some are
ongoing that is they are the same every week, like the TV Journal and NY
Times summaries and summary presentations. We will go over some in
class, and I will collect other assignments and correct and comment on
them. I will NOT accept late assignments. Assignments are accepted only
on or before the due date. If you are absent from class, you are
responsible for making arrangements to have your work handed in on time
and to find out about the work you missed in class (such as handouts),
including any homework. An absence is not an excuse for not doing the
work! Note:
If you miss 3 assignments or more during the semester your grade will
be dropped one letter (instead of an A you will get a B and so on). Your
assignments will be graded A (good), B (O.K.) or C (not good enough).
If you get more than two C grades you may resubmit assignments for a
second grade. I will take these into account for your final grade.
ASSESSMENT
Class participation 30%
Ongoing Assignments: TV Journal, Class Blog contributions, Presentations and Out-of-Class assignments 50%
Final Presentations: 20%

letter sized paper ONLY! I will not accept oddly sized paper. All
writing done out of class (except New York Times summaries and TV
Journal) should be typed unless I ask you to do otherwise. Use Times New
Roman or Arial font, size 12 only. Title your work in Bold lettering, add your name and date to all your work. Pens.
Yes, no pencils for your writing--sorry! We will discuss how to do
corrections cleanly and professionally so you will not need correction
fluid or erasers of any kind.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance
is mandatory for all class sessions. If you have more than 4 unexcused
absences you will fail. Three 15 minute latenesses are equal to 1
absence.
CLASSROOM LANGUAGE AND ETIQUETTE
You
will be expected to behave professionally and with politeness in all
aspects of this course. This includes using the correct language to
express your opinions. It also means that you will complete all
assignments to the best of your ability and be prepared for class by
pre-reading chapters. You will be expected to take responsibility for
your own learning and be an independent student by volunteering your
opinions and answers to questions in class. To get the best out of our
class you will need to be open minded and receptive to different
opinions and ways of doing things. You need to speak only English
in this class. This includes talking to your classmates before and
after class. It might be difficult at first but, you are here to improve
your English after all! It is also important to be polite in class.
When your teacher or a classmate is speaking, please listen; do not
interrupt or have private conversations (this is considered rude among
polite people in this country). Give your full attention to the speaker.
Please turn off any cell phones. If you don’t understand something,
please raise your hand and ask me.
STUDY BUDDIES

(homework) are required to be handed in whether you are in class or
not. Therefore, If you are absent, you should call a classmate to find
out what you missed. You should also make sure you get copies from your
classmates of any handouts given in class. Write down names and phone
numbers of at least two classmates you can call:
